Swindlehurst

(and variants)

a name first recorded (as known currently - see below) in 1189AD - when Adam de Swinleyhurst applied to the Forest Court of the Forest of Bowland for the right to extract timber. The origins of the name, and of the people who carry the name, have been the subject of many years of research by a group of very dedicated folk. The results to date of their endeavours can be seen at The Swindlehurst World Family page. Very recent research has revealed a possibility that the name may have originated in Anglezarke (an area of land to the east of Chorley, Lancashire) and may have been carried to Bowland by migration. Research is ongoing - watch this space. Other research, particularly that associated with investigation of the Viking input to the North-west of England, has revealed that the Swindlehursts are long-time residents of this wonderful country.

There have been at least 40 variations in the spelling of the name through the centuries, the only remaining significant one being Swinglehurst.
